Process Lasso: Windows process automation and CPU optimization

Process Lasso, developed by Bitsum, is Windows process automation and optimization software that works like an automated task manager. It aims to keep a PC responsive during high CPU loads and lets users decide how individual processes run, using persistent rules for CPU affinities, priority classes, power plans and related settings. The current version is 18.4.0, and it supports Windows 7 through 11 as well as Windows Server 2012 through 2025.

Core mechanism: ProBalance

ProBalance is the central algorithm. It temporarily lowers the priority of background processes that monopolize the CPU, which helps prevent one or several runaway processes from making the system unresponsive while the CPU is under heavy load. The developer offers a CPUEater demo to illustrate how ProBalance behaves.

Automation and rules

Persistent rules can apply CPU affinities, priorities and disallowed processes, the last of which are terminated immediately when matched. Watchdog rules take action on a process when a threshold is reached, and advanced watchdog rules extend this to matched processes that meet resource-use or other criteria. Instance limits restrict how many instances of a process may run in a user session, while the Instance Balancer spreads CPU cores among running instances of an application. Multi-select operations and configuration profiles allow several processes to be handled at once and let users switch between rule sets.

CPU control features

• CPU Affinities: Permanent affinities so processes run on a chosen set of CPUs every time they launch.
• CPU Sets: A softer form of affinity that works more like preferred cores.
• CPU Limiter: Dynamically and temporarily caps a process’s CPU use when it reaches a threshold.
• Group Extender: Lets applications that are unaware of processor groups make full use of the CPU.
• Hyper-Threading or SMT control: Dynamically disables Hyper-Threading or SMT on a per-process basis.

Power and sleep management

Power Profile Automation switches power plans when specified processes are running, while the system is idle through IdleSaver, or on a manual timer through Keep Awake. Performance Mode switches to the Bitsum Highest Performance power plan while demanding applications run. Prevent Sleep keeps the PC awake for a set time or while selected processes are running.

Windows integration and monitoring

• Efficiency Mode: Controls and persists Windows 11’s Efficiency Mode, which marks processes as not performance critical.
• Responsiveness Metric: Measures how responsive Windows is on a continuous basis and displays the result in the graph.
• Audit System Activity: Logs process launches and other selected system activity.

Architecture and interface

The algorithms and process rules are enforced by Process Governor, a stand-alone background service designed for minimal resource use. The graphical interface is optional. The main window shows a live graph, a process list with rules and a log of every adjustment, and rules can be edited in one consolidated view. CPU affinity presets can be named per CCD, and installed games can be selected when creating rules.
